The heart runs on electricity. Few of us realize that we are electric beings par excellence. When our body doesn’t have enough potassium and conduction is weak, we feel weak as well, devoid of energy, paralyzed by painful cramps. The heartbeat becomes irregular and life hangs in the balance. Love, too, is an electrical phenomenon. When the lover beholds the beloved for the first time, his heart is permanently altered; the electrons and protons align themselves in the image of the other person. Every new encounter that increases admiration for the beloved increases also the hold on the heart and the dependence on the other’s presence. That’s why when the other leaves or dies, the hearts cannot forget.its shape is altered and no effort of will can establish its original state. With time, the electrical balance of the heart returns, perhaps not to neutral, because there will always remain places, fragrances, images, and melodies which will stir up the configuration of love, causing the heart to ache, but at least to a state of rest. Sometimes, like a tree whose juices no longer flow and that has ceased to bloom and is to all appearances dead, the heart will awaken and the tree will suddenly be covered with blossoms. It’s a rare miracle, magnificent to behold but nearly impossible to survive.
